A diorama is a three-dimensional model that depicts a scene, such as a historical event, architectural feature, or natural environment.
Ever wanted to create a window into a non-existing, fantasy world?During this project we are going to do exactly that!
You are going to learn what surrealism is and create a surrealistic diorama. Giving the viewer a look into a strange but interesting world.
Inquisitive: I am curious and I like to learn new things. I actively take part in lessons and activities
Risk-taking: I am willen to try new and different things. I am not afraid to make mistakes and I know I can learn from them.
Reflective: I am learning to understand what my strengths and points of development are. I am trying to grow and improve.
Knowledgable: I am learning new things and I can follow the lessons.
Surrealism was an artistic and literary movement started by the French poet André Breton in 1924 and continued until World War II. The Surrealists were inspired by Sigmund Freud’s ideas about the mind. They wanted to challenge what they saw as the strict and boring rational thinking of modern society. Instead, they tried to explore a “higher reality” by looking into dreams and the subconscious mind. MoMa - Surrealism
Example:
Surrealist paintings often show strange scenes, like melting clocks or flying fish. These images come from dreams or imagination, not from real life.
Think about it:
What do you think “subconscious” means?
Can you imagine a dream that could be turned into a painting?
Why do you think the Surrealists didn’t like rational thinking?
Why do you think dreams can inspire art?
While watching, answer the questions in your dummy:
Can you explain surrealism in your own words?
What does the video mean with the subconsious?
Why do you think the criticts thought the Surrealistic exhibition was rubbish?

To practice thinking like a surrealist artist, you're going to create make a collage.
Collect the following images from magazines:
4x picture with the same colour/shade/tone
Something big and something small
4x picture with that you can connect to each other
4x picture of a person or aspects of the human body so you can create a new human image.
Arrange your collage in 3x different interesting compositions and take a picture of each! Then choose your favourite composition and stick it into your dummy.
Criteria:
think about background & foreground
your collage fills a whole A4 page, no white of the paper is visable
you have shown originality, creativity and your understanding of surrealism
Examples of collages - Discuss with your neighbour, why are these collages surrealistic?
Your going to make a diorama box and then fill it with a surrealistic scene. Follow the instructions as to how to make the box.
Criteria:
there should be something surreal going on in the scene/mood
3 or more layers of depth! (atleast background - middel area- foreground ?+ frame optional?)
original and creative story or theme
interesting composition
your diorama is neatly made
no more cardboard is visible
Describe your scene in your diorama. What do we see from left to right? Use descriptive language (click here for examples of descriptive vocabulary).
Explain how your scene relates to surrealism.
Look at the Broklede Learning tracks. Which track have you mostly worked on this project and how did you grow in this learning track? Give evidence.
Which assignment criteria did you accomplish 100% and which criteria could have used a little more attention and why?
What are you proud of?
