It's 5 o'clock at night when I'm woken up by een soft scratchy sound. I move my head around in the hopes of finding out where the sound is coming from. I jump up onto the bed as I realise that the sound is coming from under the bed! I start to pant and shiver heavily! I try to steady my breath as different scenarios run through my mind. What on earth is under my bed?!
During this assignment you will come up with a story in which your self made-up monster is the main character. After this process we will bring our monsters to life by claying it and creating a habitat* for it.
You will learn:
to come up with ideas and how to develop ideas.
what texture is and how to apply this to your ideas.
how to use clay and apply texture.
Inquisitive: I am curious and I like to learn new things. I actively take part in lessons and activities
Risk-taking: I am willen to try new and different things. I am not afraid to make mistakes and I know I can learn from them.
Reflective: I am learning to understand what my strengths and points of development are. I am trying to grow and improve.
Knowledgable: I am learning new things and I can follow the lessons.
Open-minded: I am open to the world around me and interested in what is happening right now. I like to explore other cultures and learn about different people. I find respect important.
You're going to research what kind of monsters exist in folklore, fabels, legends, myths and fairytales. Google these terms and find stories with monsters in them.
Tip! If you google: one of the above terms for stories + monsters . You will find a lot!
Assignment in class: make a word document with 3 monsters that you found. Add the names and if possible what kind of monster it is.
Save this document in your Onedrive art folder and Print this document as homework and stick it in your dummy.
Every surface, object, person or piece of clothing feels different. This is also something that artists try to show in their work. Have a look at the paintings beneath. What material are they made of and how would they feel if you touhed them do you think?
Assignment for in class: go through the pile of magazines and find 3 examples of texture and stick these in your dummy.
With each picture, write down what material you think it is made of and how you think it would feel if you would touch it.
Use the touch adjective to help you write www.sightwordsgame.com/parts-of-speech/adjectives/touch/ .
Fold an A4 paper in 4 parts (fold it in half first and then fold that in half again). Each person at the table will draw one part of the monster.
head
top part of body
lower part of body
Feet/tail/end of body
Of course your monster does not need to have all these elements but make sure that four people can draw the monster.
What do you want your monster to look like? Write or draw as many things on your page as you can.
Think about all the different element that you want your monster to have, its texture and also where the monster would live.
See the descriptive adjective list for help www.thesaurus.com/e/grammar/list-of-adjectives/
Monsters and stories are always connected. Write your own story in your dummy (max. 150 words). Try to write the story in such a way that the readers can see the story in their mind. Include:
what is the monster doing? (describe an action that is taking place at that moment. Think about which grammar tense you should be using!)
where is it happening? (what does the surroundings look like?)
Why is it a monster and what does it look like? (use the words from the woord web)
All the words that describe where the monster is, should be underlined with a GREEN pencil.
And all the words that describe what the monster looks like, should be underlined with a YELLOW pencil.
Now that you have some ideas and a story set, we're going to come up with 3 way that show what your monster could look like!
Draw 3 sketches of what your monster could look like. Draw them in a powerful position. Think about:
shapes of the body/head/legs/tails/arms/etc.
special elements
texture of the skin
make the monster interesting to see from all sides
colours and what they symbolise
Name
You're going to bring your monster to life, in 3D! You have this hour only!
Start first by making the base shape of the monster and from there on pinch and push with your thumb and index finger to create the shapes you want.
Once you've got the shapes, create details and the texture of the skin/fur etc. Try and be creative, what objects can you use to get this texture?
Need to add on pieces of clay to your big shape? Make sure you smooth our the edges so its fully attatched to each other. Sometimes it can help to make the area between it more wet.
Again, make sure that your monster is interesting to look at from all sides!
Take a picture when finished! Just incase something happens to it.
We need: paint, brushes, palet paper (to put our paint on) and a cup of water.
Think about texture and mixing interesting colours.
With the help of your story and the magazines, you're going to make a collage which will show the habitat of your monster. Make sure the surroundings go with your story and monster.
We will make the collage in your dummy. One side of the dummy will be the ground, the other side will be the background and show the surrounding or shelter of the monster's habitat.
Once you're done, put your monster on the ground and take a picture!
