Have you ever drawn or painted a landscape? Claude Monet was a brilliant impressionistic painter who loved to capture all the light and colours of the outdoors.
During this project you will learn:
what astmospheric perspective is.
how to paint a landscape painting.
what impressionism is.
how to recognise impressionistic characteristics.
how to enlargen a reference photo to fit a bigger paper.
to mix colours in order to get the right colours.
Claude Monet, 1899
Inquisitive: I am curious and I like to learn new things. I actively take part in lessons and activities
Risk-taking: I am willen to try new and different things. I am not afraid to make mistakes and I know I can learn from them.
Reflective: I am learning to understand what my strengths and points of development are. I am trying to grow and improve.
Knowledgable: I am learning new things and I can follow the lessons.
Open-minded: I am open to the world around me and interested in what is happening right now. I like to explore other cultures and learn about different people. I find respect important.
To be able to paint a landscape painting, it is important to understand the difference elements that a landscape is made up of. Let's have a look at the video.
Important to remember:
Atmospheric perspective = how we see the world around us.
Closer to the viewer: darker, more detail
Further away: lighter, less detail
To be able to create the various tintes and shades of colour that are needed for a landscape painting, it is important to be able to mix colours.
You will practice this during today's lesson on the colour theory worksheet.
Words to remember:
primary colours
secondary colours
tertiary colours
Value
Shade
Tint
Can you guess who made which picture?
a) Van Gogh
b) Monet
c) Renoir
d) Manet
Draw this bingo in your dummy and listen for these words while watching the video about Impressionisme!
Design (what was painted):
personal interpretation (opinion of what something means) of reality.
the mood of the painting is more important than the reality.
Nature scenes like landscapes
Everyday scenes like family dinner
Style (how it was made):
the painting feels like a quick painting. It captures the light and colour of a particular moment.
the outer edges of the shapes are vage and fade into each other. They do not have to be 100% accurate.
artists painted outside (plein-air)
colour was applied directly onto the painting.
No black was used
brush strokes feel spontaneous
The Impressionist set up their own exhibition called “Hungry for independence”. Imagine you are a curator (someone who decides what to hang where during an exhibition). Which landscape painting would you suggest to hang up and why is it Impressionistic?
Firstly, choose a landscape painting made by one of the following painters. (3minutes) Search the name in Google Arts&culture and/or the "name + landscape" in google images.
Edgar Degas
Claude Monet
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Camille Pissarro
Édouard Manet
Renoir
Mary Cassatt
Paul Cézanne
Eva Gonzalès
Georges Seurat
Berthe Morisot
Secondly, write down in your dummy two argument as to why this painting is impressionistic.
Thirdly, write down in your dummy how the atmospheric perspective is used.
Lastly, when the teacher tells you to, share your picture and your answers with a classmate and check each others answers. Do you agree with their arguments and atmospheric explanation?

For the remainder of the hour you're going to practice painting in the same style and colours that the Impressionistic artists used!
Assignment: try to finish the other half of the painting in the same colours and style (scroll up if you need to have another look at the Impressionistic characteristics).
Finished? Together with your table, go back to the Impressionistic characteristics and compare the characteristics to your works. What did you do or try to do and what can you do better next time? How could you improve your Impressionistic style? (Use expressions from the speaking bank above if you need help phrasing your sentences).
How to start? Start with deciding where the horizon is and work on the background (furthest away). From there, work you way from the background to the foreground (closest).
During the next few lessons you will turn a regular landscape photo into an impressionistic painting.
Also, you will transform your small picture into a larger painting (we call this: to enlarge something).
find a photo of a landscape. Make sure that it fits the impressionistic characteristics (scroll up or down to the characteristics).
Send the photo to me via teams chat.
Once you get your photo, cut it out and follow the steps on how to enlargen a photo.
Got your paper ready? Start sketching your composition (where what is on your paper).
Finished your composition? Paint your landscape in a impressionistic way (have a look at the impressionistic characteristics below).
Follow the steps on your photo and painting papers.
you may only use the primary colours (yellow, red, blue) en the black and white.
Black may only be used to darken a colour. NOT by itself in the painting.
Don't be affraid to work wet-in-wet on your painting!

your chosen landscape painting made by an impressionistic painter and your two arguments why it's impressionistics. Also include your explanation as to how atmospheric perspective is used.
your half photo - half impressionistic techniek and colour practice.
your enlargened final painting in which you demonstrate that you are able to create a work in impressionistic style, colour and atmospheric perspective.
