What are we going to learn?
how to draw a correctly proportioned face
how to draw facial elements realistically
what the art style expressionisme is
how to draw an expressionistic portrait
Inquisitive: I am curious and I like to learn new things. I actively take part in lessons and activities
Risk-taking: I am willen to try new and different things. I am not afraid to make mistakes and I know I can learn from them.
Reflective: I am learning to understand what my strengths and points of development are. I am trying to grow and improve.
Knowledgable: I am learning new things and I can follow the lessons.
By understanding the proportions of the head, we are able to consciously draw faces that look realistic.
Let's have a look at the different things that are part of the facial proportions.
As you probably know, the face is not a flat surface. There are different areas that stick out or that go inwards. It can help to see and sketch the face more abstractly so that we can keep this in mind when adding the facial elements and details like shading.
Assignment 1.
Take these photo references below and focus on the shape of the face and where you would put the facial elements in the head shape. Don't look at details, focus on the shapes and placing of the elements.
Assignment:
Stick two eyes, noses, mouths onto your dummy page and try to draw them as realistically as you can.
-Cut these out of the school magazines-
Pay attention to:
Realistic shapes
Shadows (use a b pencil)
Contrasts (light vs. dark areas)
Proportions (the facial features in the right place)
Live drawing during the lesson.
Pair up and try to sketch the face of the other.
Assignment 3.
3a) Shadow drawing and placing of facial elements with 6b pencil: 2x 2min (+ swap person)
3b) Draw head shape and put facial elements in place and a little bit more detail with 2/4b/6b pencil: 2x 5min (+ swap person)
3c) Find a black and white photo of a celebrity online and work on that for remainder of the hour with 2/4b/6b: 2x 30min. Photo must be taken from the front!!
Pay attention to:
Realistic shapes
Shadows (use a b pencil)
Contrasts (light vs. dark areas)
Proportions (the facial features in the right place)
